GANANA

PDC/KTH is leading the recently launched GANANA project to establish a long-term collaboration between Europe and India in the field of high-performance computing (HPC) applications in high priority research areas. The European Union (EU) and India have a common interest in ensuring security, prosperity and sustainable development based on shared values, particularly in light of existing geostrategic challenges, so deepening the digital cooperation between the EU and India through projects like GANANA is important.

Three European HPC Centres of Excellence focusing on the domains of biomedical and life sciences, natural hazards, and weather modelling (namely the BioExcel European Centre of Excellence for Computational Molecular Biology, the ChEESE Centre of Excellence for Exascale in Solid Earth, and the ESiWACE3 Centre of Excellence in Simulation of Weather and Climate in Europe) will collaborate with several Indian institutions, including the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), the India Meteorological Department, the Institute for Seismological Research, and the National Institute of Immunology.

GANANA aims to leverage the combined computational power of leading supercomputers in both Europe and India to address global challenges and foster innovation. This initiative will include the EuroHPC pre-exascale systems LUMI in Finland, LEONARDO in Italy and MareNostrum 5 in Spain, as well as the AI Research Analytics and Knowledge Dissemination Platform (AIRAWAT) at C-DAC in India.

The GANANA project will strengthen the exchange of expertise and foster research links between Europe and India. It will also enhance the shared development of software for HPC applications. The project partners include universities and supercomputing centres from Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden, along with partners from India. The project will run from February 2025 to January 2028 with the European side of the project receiving funding from the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking and the Indian partners financing their participation independently.
