"Introduction to High Performance Computing"
PDC Summer School 2021

Location: KTH main campus, Stockholm, Sweden

Note: Due to the ongoing pandemic situation, remote/online attendance is also possible.

Dates: 23 August - 3 September 2021

Would your research benefit from using modern supercomputers? Are you interested in deepening your understanding of such systems and learning how to write parallel programs? Are you looking to improve your skills in performance analysis, performance optimisation and software engineering?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, or if you want to learn the basics about high-performance parallel computing, the PDC Center for High Performance Computing (PDC), in conjunction with the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden, invites you to our summer school: "Introduction to High-Performance Computing". The course is given in English and is open to researchers, as well as master's and PhD students, from anywhere in the world. Due to the pandemic situation, participants may select to attend the school remotely.

To find out more about our summer school, visit our web page .

The PDC Summer School in High Performance Computing has been held at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm (almost) each summer since 1996 to help researchers to improve their scientific computing skills.

During two intensive summer weeks, summer school participants are introduced to programming supercomputers. They furthermore learn how to improve programs for parallel scientific applications so that they run more efficiently.

Ph.D. students who are enrolled in the PDC Summer School as KTH course FDD3258 and who successfully complete the course (including the associated programming project) will be awarded 7.5 ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) credits. Note that 1.5 ECTS credits are equivalent to a workload of one 40-hour week, so the whole course is equivalent to five full-time weeks of study including the project work.

During the summer school, participants will be given access to PDC's supercomputers.

There are a limited number of spaces available on the course, so please register early!

Registration for the 2021 summer school will open on 1 June and close on 30 June 2021.

The summer school classes will consist of about 75 hours of lectures and computer lab sessions. The following topics will be covered:

  • HPC computer architectures,
  • Parallel algorithms,
  • Performance analysis,
  • Performance engineering,
  • Software engineering,
  • Parallel programming using OpenMP,
  • Parallel programming using MPI,
  • GPU programming, and
  • Python for HPC.

Additional enlightening talks will provide an outlook beyond the lectures.

The lectures will be given by experts, and will be followed by hands-on sessions on the PDC supercomputers with support from lecturers and additional trainers. This will enable participants to obtain practical experience of the HPC topics covered in lectures.
