Awk is a domain-specific language designed for text processing and typically used as a data extraction and reporting tool. It is a standard feature of most Unix-like operating systems.

This workshop aims to promote the awk tool for use in everyday research work and urges you to find solutions yourself rather than expecting ready-made ones. Thus, the material given during the seminar will not be a complete guide or manual. The purpose of the workshop is to give an overview of the capabilities of the awk language and to underline some of its particular strengths as well as its disadvantages.

There will be two sessions in the workshop.

  • 9.00-12.00: Lectures and interactive examples
  • 13.15-16.00: Awk workshop (exercises and solving problems)

You may attend either or both sessions. The morning session will be an introduction to awk with examples and the afternoon workshop will focus on practical exercises and solving problems
