Project Tips

Here are some important tips to help you do your course project.

General:

Project Topics:

Here are a few possible sources for project ideas in case you have not already thought of one:

Performance Model:

IMPORTANT: Check to see if your tutor requires you to including a "Performance Model" in your report. It may not always be necessary, or possible.

Performance:

  • Performance runs must be made on dedicated nodes. Limit them to some reasonable part of the machine.
  • State how much memory you use. (Tip on estimating memory usage)
  • State which compiler options you used.
  • State which MPI routines you used.
  • State all relevant parameters, e.g., number of time steps.
  • Save your performance data.

Format:

  • Include a date or version number on the front page.
  • References should be numbered and referred to.
  • Figures and tables should have captions and be referred to in the text.
  • Of course, for every figure always label X and Y axes (e.g., time, cores, etc) and always state units (e.g., minutes, GB, etc)
  • Include pointers to source code (i.e., where online can it be found), not the entire source listing.
  • Submit your completed project as a PDF. Do not submit DVI or DOC files!
