SecureCRT
About SecureCRT
SecureCRT is a terminal emulator for encrypted Secure Shell sessions (SSH) developed by VanDyke Software.
PDC provides users who use Windows to access PDC resources the possibility to use SecureCRT.
Please contact PDC support to get your own license for SecureCRT.
Installation
- Install and run Xming. This software will enable you to use X-window forwarding.
- Check that Xming is running, you should see an icon in the down right corner of your screen (close to the clock):

- Install MIT Kerberos for Windows.
- Make sure that you have gotten valid Kerberos tickets.
- Install the 32-bit (scrt_sfx673_PDC_KTH.exe) or 64-bit Windows (scrt_sfx673-x64_PDC_KTH.exe) that you received from PDC support . The version numer (6.7.3) will of course change when new releases of SecureCRT are available.
Connect to PDC using SecureCRT
- Start SecureCRT either by selecting it among All Programs in the Start menu, or by using a desktop short cut.

- If you get this dialog window:

Leave it as it is and press ok. - SecureCRT will now start. If the following window appears, press Yes to get any new updates.

- If the Quick connect window appears, you can connect to PDC (in this case ferlin.pdc.kth.se) using these settings:

- If you don't get the quick connect dialog, in SecureCRT select the startup dialog. In this window click on the New Session icon (third one from the left).

- In the window that appears, select ssh2 and press next.

- Now it is time to decide which PDC resource you want to connect to. In this example we want to connect to Ferlin's login node ferlin.pdc.kth.se. Therefore enter ferlin.pdc.kth.se in the field Hostname and leave all other fields blank.

- The first time you use SecureCRT you will also need to enable X-window forwarding. Open Properties and select the Remote/X11 category (under Port Forwarding). Check Forward X11 packets. Close any existing connections to PDC, make sure you have Xming running and connect again to PDC. You should now be able to open X-windows.
Transferring files - SecureFX
File transfer is done using scp. The SecureCRT installer that PDC provides to its users include both SecureCRT and SecureFX. SecureFX offers the scp mechanism using a graphical user interface for the file transfer. In the SecureCRT window there is a button which opens the SecureFX file transfer window. No separate login is required if you are already running an ssh connection to the PDC resource of interest.
For details, look at the file transfer instructions.
Further help on SecureCRT
- If you have problems to log in using SecureCRT, enable Trace options (in the menu). Then, try to reconnect and afterwards look at the log. If you can't find a solution, e-mail that log to PDC support for further help.
- You can configure SecureCRT to allow you to double click to select text (such as "-123.4567890") directly from the screen:
- Options -> Session Options -> Terminal: Check "Set word delimiter characters:", and use "` ~!@#$%^&*()+=\|]}[{'";:/>,<" as the delimiter.
- If you have any problems with SecureCRT we recommend that you start by looking for answers at the FAQ page for SecureCRT.
- For in depth understanding of the mechanisms behind SecureCRT, take a look at VanDyke's white papers.
