Ferlin will retire on January 1, 2012

As of the first of January 2012, PDC's foundation level system Ferlin is being retired.

Note! This information is no longer valid. See this page for details.

As of the first of January 2012, Ferlin will be retired. The cluster will not be available for further usage after this date, particularly:

  • There will be no SNAC allocations on Ferlin in 2012.
  • Ferlin may be turned off at anytime without prior notice after the first of January 2012.
  • All existing time allocations will be terminated on January 1, 2012.
If you are running programs on Ferlin you need to migrate your code to other resources. You can continue to run jobs on Ferlin until the end of December, but you should of course prepare in advance and start migrating your code to other resources well ahead of the end of December 2011.

PDC has tried to work with SNIC on a replacement system to provide a continuous service but SNIC has still made no decision in that matter.

As a consequence, PDC won't be able to offer a Ferlin-like throughput system in the next round of SNAC allocations starting Jan. 1st, 2012.We therefore urge all Ferlin users to apply for time allocations on other SNIC capacity systems:

http://www.snic.vr.se/apply-for-resources

The deadline for the next round of Large time allocations is soon, October 24. We are happy to help you in the application process and you are always welcome to contact PDC support.

You may also note that available SNIC throughput systems offered in 2012 are significantly smaller than Ferlin, however, please make sure to ask for time allocations that realistically cover your needs. This will allow SNIC to better determine the actual need for that kind of system.

Please note that PDC's capability system Lindgren is dedicated to large scale, wide jobs (i.e. massively parallel jobs) and thus is not considered a replacement system for Ferlin.

Ferlin is named after Swedish 20th Century poet Nils Ferlin and its two login nodes are called ferlin.pdc.kth.se and ferlin2.pdc.kth.se respectively.

The environment is the same as elsewhere at PDC, with Kerberos login, AFS for home directories and EASY as the queuing system. Software packages are accessed using the module system.

Read more about the hardware. There is also a Guide to how to compile and run programs on Ferlin.

Ferlin is a foundation Level System (FLS) i.e. intended for applications that are not dependent on a fast network. It is mainly intended for local use, i.e the Stockholm region. Of the 640 nodes connected to Ethernet, 205 belongs to the Stockholm Center for Biomembrane Research.
